Extra Credit Available, Due Sat 16th

For anyone interested in improving their grade, extra credit will be available.  You can do one or more Apple ][ or Atari VCS reviews, each well done review will increase your grade by one-half letter grade (from a C to a C+, or from a C+ to a B-, for instance).  Extra credit is due on Sat by 6pm.

Also, if you’re interested in doing something beyond the assignments above, please contact me, I’m open for suggestions, as long as they are equivalent sized work.  In the past, people have composed audio on a 2600, created custom sprites for Mario Bros. and more.  You can definitely have fun doing this.

Class On April 8 Will Be Off Campus

For our class this Wednesday, we’ll be attending a talk by Sandra Voelker, Senior Technical Artist, Electronic Arts:

Electronic Arts, Dead Space – Creature creation, from Concept to Gameplay. The vision can start with movie clips, sound bites, or photographs. A story is drafted and refined. Then it’s sent to concept artists to be sketched and sculpted until that vision can be understood by all. This process is tested even further when working with teams all over the globe trying to achieve a single goal : “To Create The Scariest Video Game EVER!”. We will be discussing: How Dead Space dealt with these challenges; How did game limitations lead to character design decisions; What kind of technology was developed to support a global team; And how we created our characters.

This should give us a cool view into moder game creation, specifically focusing on character creation and details around this.  It’s an interesting and complex thing to do well, this should be an enlightening discussion.

Assignment 1, Due 3/11

Your first assignment has been given, you can download the full assignment here:

The short of it is this: design an arcade game from the golden age of arcades (the time period from 1978-1984).  You have access to the technology of the day – this may seem limiting, but you have the advantage of seeing all of the games that have been developed since then.

Have fun, contact me with any questions!
